Associate Professor Kadiri Akeem Babalola, a University of Lagos (UNILAG) lecturer, has been arrested by the police in Lagos for alleged sexual assault and rape of a 20-year-old female undergraduate of the institution.
The victim had accused Dr Babalola, an Associate Professor of Botany, of having committed the crime during her visit to his office to address issues related to her results.
The victim, who reported the incident to the Inclusive Social Welfare and Empowerment Foundation, stated that the assault occurred on August 16, 2023. Subsequently, the NGO reported the case to the Gender Unit of the state Police Command.
In response to the report, the Commissioner of Police, CP Idowu Owohunwa, issued a warrant of arrest for Babalola through the state High Court, after the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG was given seven days to produce the accused.
When summoned for questioning by the VC, Babalola reportedly admitted to the crime. The VC promptly informed the police through the Chief Security Officer of the institution, leading to Babalola’s arrest.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson of the state Police Command, confirmed the incident and stated that the suspect is in custody. Further legal proceedings are expected in the coming days.
